In the Philippines, it is hard to get financial advice especially the low financial literacy of the Filipinos comparing to other neighboring countries such as Singapore.

These days, it seems as though almost everyone has an idea of how you can get ahead as an investor. However, no matter how good the investment advice sounds, you need to do a gut-check. Can you trust this person? And why is he or she sharing such a great tip with you?

While you can listen to the investment ideas put forth by just about anyone, it’s another thing to whole-heartedly trust someone else with your money. Before you take the plunge, carefully examine the situation and the fundamentals, and then reconsider. Here are 5 people you should be wary of when they are giving you investment advice:
1. Family ( Related Topic: What is the best investment for you? )
It’s tempting to get in on that “hot” tip that your brother-in-law is offering, or get in on the bottom floor on that “investment opportunity” Your cousin is involved with. Unfortunately, too often, your family members don’t really understand investing. Like many others, they are following the herd, and that “hot” stock may be in bubble mode.
investmentEven worse is the possibility that your family member has been taken in by an investment scam. Going in can mean that you are caught in the trap, too. Before taking the advice of a family member, review his or her track record with finances, as well as remind yourself that your family member probably doesn’t have the know-how or credentials to be giving investing tips.
2. Strangers ( Related Topic: how to reduce debt? )
Why would a stranger go out of the way to give you great investment advice? In this category are those emails you receive about penny stocks and other “opportunities.” Also, be wary of taking advice from strangers you meet in social settings. He or she might be bragging about his or her investing prowess, but you don’t really have any proof that there is a real performance capability there.
3. Co-Workers ( Related Topic: Legal Forex Scams)
Unless you work in the investment industry, and your co-workers are all analyzing the merits of a particular investment, your co-workers probably aren’t the best people to turn to for financial advice. Instead, your co-workers are likely just behind the curve, buying when everyone else is, and selling in panic when things go south.
On top of that, co-workers are often sources of investment scams. They get taken in by scams, and then ask you to participate. They may be in earnest about the “opportunity”, but that doesn’t make you feel better after you’ve both been duped.
4. Media Talking Heads ( Related Topic: How to reduce your debt? )
It may be fun to watch Jim Cramer’s antics, but it’s important not to take your advice from media talking heads. Financial media don’t exist to inform investors. The primary goal of the financial media is to make money; any education or useful information provided to investors is merely a side product.
One of the best ways to make money is to sensationalize things. Media talking heads try to draw you in by convincing you that something is practically full-proof, or by whipping up fear about the imminent disaster. Making investment decisions based on these extremes presented by the media can lead to big losses to your portfolio.
Take the news with a grain of salt. Instead, you are better off following your own investing plan designed for the long haul, and ignoring the noise from the TV screen.
5. Brokers and Other Wall Street Types
( Related Topic: Risking your life with brokers and advocates)
Going to a stockbroker for advice seems like a slam dunk. After all, these folks know all about investing. Unfortunately, Wall Street types probably don’t have your best financial interests at heart. Brokers are, on a basic level, salespeople. This means that they are trying to get you to buy products that will earn them a better commission.
Whether it’s someone at your local bank, or a broker with an official firm, the reality is that these advice-givers only have to recommend something that is “suitable.” And suitably isn’t the same things as “best”.
If you want solid advice from a professional, consider using a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) or a fee-based financial planner. The RIA has a fiduciary responsibility under the law to look to your interests ahead of the commission, and a good financial planner that isn’t paid by commissions can offer mostly unbiased advice.

Investments offers a dangerous draw: enormous rewards with the possibility of awful losses. Investors are in love with the idea of amassing wealth, however, no one likes to lose their money. The key here is to learn how to invest your money with minimal risks. It’s impossible to predict the daily fluctuations of our market, but as you begin to invest you’ll soon learn to withstand the losses and bounce back with the next market swell.

Related Topic: 6 Reasons why you need Wealth Management
The market cannot be controlled, but with practice you will learn how to invest wisely when buying stocks, bonds, options, ETFs (i.e a silver ETF and biotech ETF), trading forex or even mutual funds. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the products of the business you’re investing in before you take the plunge. Also, remember that market high isn’t everlasting. It’s wise to invest into a powerful stock with a long lasting record than a recent trend that’s in the first year of its infancy. These usually don’t last.

Equally as important to the product is your thinking behind the decision to invest in it. A very important step in locating good stocks to invest in is to know the company of the stock very well- so you’ll be one step ahead of the game and already know the direction of your next move. For example, if you’re investing only for profit you’ll know to drop out once the prices fall instead of worrying about whether to hang in there until the next market high.

Related Topic: Philippine Stocks erased all earnings for the year 2013 .
Investing is all about the timing – by this I mean the timing of your moves in relation to the market highs and market lows. You must know when it’s time to cut your losses. It’s equally important to know when to take the profits and run. Many people believe running a profit when the market is up to be the correct course of action. However, many others are afraid the market will soon fall. When the market dips you should cut your losses. Back out quickly before the situation gets worse.

Never ever invest in things you cannot afford and never invest without a sound reasoning. Yes the market highs are incredibly rewarding, but the market low is also part of the journey. Much of investing is run by guy instinct, but you shouldn’t and cannot afford to make reckless choices.  Mutual funds are always a great place to start – and finding a no load mutual fund, without any fees is on the safe side when it comes to investing in the stock market.
A popular investment these days are ETFs like the energy ETF (energy-sector exchange traded funds), silver ETF, financial ETF, natural gas ETF and more.  If you aren’t sure about a specific company, but want to get into the sector it is in, ETFs may just be for you.

The ideal thing is to study the market. Don’t throw yourself into the deep end without first studying the product record. There are many good books available. If you get a chance check out “The Real Life Investing Guide” or “The Only Investment Guide You Will Ever Need”. Know what you’re up to before you ever set foot on the path of the investor.
When the time comes to make an informed decision you’ll gain plenty of benefits from the world market. Business very unpredictable indeed, but when the market is up the reward are worth far more than the gamble.

I believe the most sensitive in all topics is about wealth management. This concept is new to filipino's even though it already existed in the US since 1990's. Currently,we see free seminars  but what is the real score behind this promo's?
Most Filipino's compare prices rather than checking the quality. This kind of concept does not apply and can be damaging when it comes to investments and topics about your wealth. Instead of helping you, it may limit your growth or even be a main reason for destruction in your finances instead of maximizing your full potential with the right products and strategies.

TOP 10 TRUTH'S AND FACT'S why it is  better to acquire information and seminars from INDEPENDENT Wealth Managers rather than Financial institution with Financial Products.

1. It's a marketing strategy. It helps them rather than it helps you.
-It is a fact that these "free" seminars are backed with financial products that they always sell to the public. People may realize in the long run  they lose more rather than they gain. We often call as a mask hiding the real face.

2. Independent Wealth managers and registered Financial planners are advocates of Truth.
       - The main objective is to help people regarding how they can maximize their full potential and how to  organize their wealth efficiently with the right products and right strategies. This will maximize their growth more than boxing yourself in one institution with 1 product in mind. Do you think they can advise you to buy their competitor even though it is best for you? The answer is definitely obvious.

 3. Wealth Managers tells 100% truth while they barely tell you the truth to protect their product.
     - It's another fact most financial institution tell people how great their product but barely show the truth about the performance. Their objective is to tell you about their services and how it can help you rather than focus on your financial health. Wealth managers objective is to help you. No added information or products.

4.  You lose more money than you gain.
        - This is a fact that most people who get their information from wrong institutions ends up losing more opportunities. Their strategies revolves around the product rather than the client.

5. They earn more than you do.
        - Filipino's should understand that people who gives free seminar sell products which in return earn through commission. This kind of system affects the growth of the client. Instead of helping them grow further, they limit themselves with existing strategies that will compliment the product.

6. They won't teach you FACTS that can affect the product during seminars.
         - This is a major fact. They will never teach you how you can choose the right products and strategies for you. The more informed clients would be, the more harder for them to sell you the product. We can compare it to a person drinking poison. This will be suicide if they will teach all the facts to you which are the IMPORTANT FACTORS in wealth management.

        - We never like discriminating people but these are facts which we need to be conscious . Wealth management is very sensitive. This can affect your overall growth and the quality of your life. Getting information from the right people may help you gain more . Getting wrong information may contribute on your losses.

In summary

Change of concept and thinking. FREE IS NOT GOOD in fixing your wealth.

Filipino's should start changing their concept about quantity and quality. In handling your wealth, Quality is more important that quantity. Definitely, anything that can help or change your financial health is a definitely worth investing.

Growing Philippines

In today's market, Philippines starting to mature and comprehend the world of investments. They tend to crave for knowledge and understanding about financial instruments that can help them achieve their goals in life. Along with the interest in investments are the brokers. From real estate to insurance, we hear left and right offers in various instruments which confuses the public.

Driving your car blindfolded?

Life is like driving a car. You exert effort/energy to get to your destination but what happen if we drive blind folded? This is one mistake most working Filipino do. They continue to work and acquire financial instruments blind folded. They get most of their information from brokers which they often sell the material to them. The result? Either they don't need the material for their current situation or over acquisition of materials driving their growth slower or even in the opposite direction.

Taking Financial advice from brokers and advocates

This is the latest trend in Philippines. Brokers and advocates are scattered in the metro claiming they have the right solution, formula or even product to help you grow. Pinoy's think they can save more money by attending advocates or brokers seminar with their product ending up with wrong solution making the situation worse. Some even pretend to be Financial planners and advocates.

"The best things in life are free except in Finance and if we talk about your money."

This is one attitude that Filipino can be relate . Looking for opportunities to save money but this concept is only applicable when acquiring assets. In service especially in Personal Finance, if you expect things are free, expect the performance of your portfolio is next to 0 or even in negative territory.

The quality of service and the investment in technology and hiring smart and highly qualified people doesn't come cheap. When we talk about Finance, investments and your money, quality is more important than being cheap or do you rather lose money?

Question coming from : Ms. Marilyn Vasquez, Hong kong
Question :
" I'm currently a OFW here in HONGKONG and i have small amount for TIME DEPOSIT .It gives small interest.I'm planning to invest in MUTUAL FUNDS.Just like to ask if it is right to invest now and how much i should invest?

Answer:

Thank you for your question .

Before we invest, we have to consider several factors. We always remember that all investment offer risk which you need to consider. Time deposit also offers risk. We call it Inflation risk.

Inflation is the rate of increase or decrease of service and goods. The more higher the inflation, the lesser the goods or service you can acquire with your money. If we consider investing at the moment, always remember to balance your current cash flow first. If we invested in the wrong time, this will destroy you rather than help you grow.

"is it right to invest now?"

There are lots of people saying that investing now is the perfect time due to market reaction to data but no one can tell when it will go down. We call this risk as Market risk. It is the result of specific data's and reports that can affect the current situation of a company. Issue like interest rate, political turmoil and other issues.

In my personal opinion, before considering investing, the person should consider first if he or she is in the right position. One wrong concept of filipino's are mostly investment is the only solution for growth. THIS IS WRONG. The right perspective would be the solution for growth is not investment but proper portfolio management.

SJF offers the right process in investing. We call this as SJF Investment Planning. It is a SJF Process which helps the client identify his or her current situation and see how much he or she can invest in a safer perspective.
We can compare this process as sacrifice 1 apple to gain 10 more apples.

Risking your life, Planning with brokers and Financial Advocates

Hard Facts about Personal Finance in the Philippines

We heard lots of financial advocacy online which promises help to individuals regarding their finances. We also hear some advocates selling books along with seminars but what is the real picture in personal finance?
The secret here is right application.
Personal finances are so broad. It talks about  your cash flow, taxes, insurance etc. which affects your personal growth and life.
The brokers and the advocates may help you but the main intention of these people is to offer  their products unconsciously. This is the reality when attending an advocate seminar. They offer  you the books and the products along with the seminar.

Bank Wealth management:

Wealth management in banks is very costly. First you need at least P1,000,000.00 to open a Private banking and thereafter they will assign a Wealth Manager to help you manage your investment and growth.

Advantage: Easy to invest.

Disadvantage: They only talk one sector which is Investment planning. They earn in all aspects. They promote their own materials, monitor your finances and study your capacity so they can give you MORE MATERIALS like credit cards and other investment materials even beyond your capacity.

Result: Limited growth all based on your bank's performance.

Insurance brokers bundle with financial planning : The suicide bundle

People think this is the most efficient and cheapest way to plan your life, Well this is the most SUICIDAL of them all. Always remember whatever they say, the number one objective is to sell you the product. They massage the brain using financial planning then give you the insurance.
Our profession  as Financial planner is very sensitive. It affects the whole life of a person. Giving Financial advice is very sensitive that it can change the course of your entire life. This is one thing Filipino's don't realize. They prefer SAVING MONEY rather than thinking about the result of the performance. They never realize, they spend MORE than they save. As one Filipino saying goes "matalino man ang matsing, naiisahan din".

Advantage: Easy to get insurance.

Disadvantage: Limited growth next to none. They earn through acquisition of insurance or mutual fund. Just look at the profession. You don't need to be a genius to know that the main reason is all about insurance. They mostly focus selling you the product and put their product to your portfolio rather than helping you.

Financial Advocates: The most suicide of them all.

If you will ask a Financial Advocate without proper training and background to help you plan your finances is like donating all your wealth to charity. These people claim to have vast knowledge regarding personal Finances through seminar and speaking engagements. The main objective of these people is again to sell you MORE PRODUCTS(books,Cd's,subscriptions etc.)

Advantage: Good motivators.

Disadvantage: No real training and formal education in personal finances. Your wealth is in high risk more than helping you get richer.
